The probable existence of a coenzyme form of biotin.

چکیده

It has been demonstrated that biotin is concerned with the enzymatic decarboxylation of oxalacetate (l-4), the reversible deamination of aspartate (5, S), and the deamination of serine and threonine (5,6). By analogy with other vitamins it might be suspected that biotin does not function in these reactions as such, but is converted into a coenzyme form. The evidence outlined below suggests that a coenzyme form of biotin does exist in certain natural materials.

P 57: The Effect of Biotin as a Therapeutic Agent for Progressive Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis is an autoimmune disease caused by damage to the myelin of the nerve cells in the spinal cord and brain, MS was classified into 4 types including: Relasping/remitting (RR) primary/progressive (PP), secondary/progressive (SP), progressive/relapsing (PR). PR MS is one of the severe forms of MS that lead to inflammation associated physical, mental and vision dysfunction. Because...

Further studies on the biotin coenzyme.

During the past several years much progress has been made in the understanding of the enzymatic functions of biotin. Although the mode of action of biotin remains to be elucidated, it is quite clear that this vitamin is involved in the oxalacetate decarboxylase system (Lardy et al., 1947; Lichstein and Umbreit, 1947; Shive and Rogers, 1947; Ochoa et al., 1947; Wessman and Werkman, 1950), the re...

Acetyl coenzyme A carboxylase system of Escherichia coli. Purification and properties of the biotin carboxylase, carboxyltransferase, and carboxyl carrier protein components.

The three protein components (biotin carboxylase, carboxyltransferase, and the biotin-containing carboxyl carrier protein of the acetyl coenzyme A carboxylase system have been resolved and purified extensively or to homogeneity from cell-free extracts of Escherichia co2i B. Carboxylation of acetyl-CoA to form malonyl-CoA requires the presence of all three components. Biotin carboxylase, which c...

The preparation of the coenzyme of aspartic acid deaminase.

Since the advent of a novel technique of enzyme resolution of bacterial aspartic acid deaminase (Lichstein and Umbreit, 1947), this enzyme has been linked with biotin (Liclstein and Umbreit, 1947; Wright et al., 1949), with adenylic acid (Lichstein and Christman, 1948), and with a coenzyme present in yeast and liver extracts (Lichstein and Christman, 1949; Christman and Lichstein, 1950). These ...
